It is indisputable that health facilities in a country promote development.
These health facilities are mostly managed by nurses and doctors who have been certified by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and other bodies like the Nurses and Midwifery Council (NMC).
It is in the light of this that when the MoH, through a public notice on July 26, 2024, with reference number MOH/HRHDD/NTA/010 and signed by the Chief Director, Alhaji Hafiz Adam, on behalf of the minister, announced its intention to recruit 15,200 nurses and midwives, it brought joy.
From the public notice, the application process was to commence on Monday, August 5, 2024.
The reality is that there are nurses and midwives who completed training in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023, and are eagerly waiting for such opportunities to be given to them.
It looks as if these opportunities are not for the 2021, 2022 and the 2023 batch of nurses and midwives, as they cannot access the portal.
The feedback when one logs onto the portal suggests that only the 2020 batch of nurses and midwives have access. Meanwhile, the public notice targeted everyone in the field.
Additionally, with even the 2020 batch of nurses and midwives, not everyone has access to the portal.
Are we willing to reduce the unemployment rate which has become a social evil and a canker eating into the fabrics of society and the country as a whole? "Health is wealth".
I, hereby, appeal to the MoH to explain issues better to the general public, knowing that they are serving the interest of the public.
Moreover, employment opportunities created for workers in the health sector should not be delayed until election seasons, because the health of the people is paramount.
