Survival Sunday in Ghana Premier League: All Blacks, Young Apostles FC, Nations FC in relegation drama
Four clubs enter the final day staring into the abyss as the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season prepares for a nerve-shredding finale where survival, pride and reputations are all on the line.
Medeama SC having already secured the title last Sunday, the real drama will unfold at the bottom half of the league log, where one more club must join Eleven Wonders and Hohoe United in relegation.
Across some key venues -- particularly in Kumasi, Tamale and Wenchi -- where battles will be fought in the shadows of anxiety, pressure and survival, managers of relegation-threatened sides carry the crushing burden of saving their clubs and avoiding the humiliation of relegation.
One wrong tactical decision, one defensive lapse, or one missed chance could condemn an entire season.
Swedru All Blacks, Young Apostles FC and Nations FC all head into tomorrow’s encounters with danger hanging heavily over them, knowing one disastrous afternoon could wipe away an entire season’s work.
One timely clearance, one mistake or one moment of brilliance could decide who survives and who sinks to the second tier.
The fiercest spotlight will fall on the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale where eighth-placed Karela United host Nations FC in what has effectively become a survival shootout.
Coach Stephen Frimpong and his Nations FC side arrive wounded and under immense pressure after last weekend’s damaging 1-0 home defeat to Vision FC. It was an encounter that many expected to have secured the Abrankese-based side breathing space.
Instead, it plunged them deeper into danger ahead of one of the toughest away assignments in the league against a Karela side that have turned Tamale into a fortress.
The statistics confronting the visiting side look scary, as Karela have lost just once in 16 home league matches, winning 12 of them. Nations FC, meanwhile, have looked fragile away from their Kwame Kyei Sports Complex home all season, suffering 12 defeats on the road and collecting only two away wins.
However, football rarely follows logic on survival day, and Coach Fimpong Manso can draw inspiration from their recent results after winning three of their last five meetings with Karela. History alone will not rescue them if they fail to handle the pressure of an afternoon where every mistake could send them tumbling into Division One.
At the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Asante Kotoko’s troubled season clashes with Swedru All Blacks’ desperate fight for survival in another potentially explosive encounter. For Kotoko, this is about wounded pride after last Sunday’s embarrassing 3-1 defeat to Bechem United deepened supporter frustration after a season of inconsistency and frustration that has left the league’s most successful club in seventh position.
The Porcupine Warriors now need a strong finish simply to restore pride and calm an increasingly restless fan base. But for All Blacks, this is about survival and they arrive in Oseikrom carrying the desperation that makes relegation-threatened teams so dangerous.
Coach Kassim Mingle Ocansey knows exactly what is at stake and has already challenged his players to rise to the occasion, especially as his side’s recent away form offers little comfort — three defeats in their last five away matches..
“We must beat Asante Kotoko to survive. Kotoko have nothing to lose, but we are highly motivated and determined for this game,” he said in an interview with Max FM ahead of the decisive clash.
Perhaps the club with survival most firmly in their own hands is Young Apostles FC who know very well that victory against FC Samartex at the Wenchi Sports Stadium guarantees their safety without depending on favours from elsewhere.
Young Apostles have strong reasons to believe they can escape the humiliation of relegation tomorrow on home soil.
The Wenchi side have won all their last five home matches, whereas FC Samartex have struggled for consistency on the road (three losses, one draw, and one win in the last five games away).
While the relegation battles dominate the headlines, champions Medeama take on Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium in a clash that has little at stake but for pride, as the Tarkwa-based side arrive in celebratory mood after a magnificent title-winning campaign.
Elsewhere, ninth-placed Berekum Chelsea host Bechem United in a fiercely contested regional derby at Golden City Park, dethroned champions Bibiani Gold Stars face already relegated Eleven Wonders at the Dun’s Park, Aduana FC travel to Tema to face Vision FC at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex, while Basake Holy Stars welcome in-form Dreams FC to the AAK Sports Arena.
