Ghana's economy expands 6 percent in second quarter, driven by communications sector

Ghana's economy grew 6.0 per cent year on year in the second quarter of 2026, driven by the communications sector though growth was slightly slower than the 6.6 per cent recorded in the same period a year earlier, official data showed on Wednesday.

  • Information, communication and technology expanded 30.9%, up from 21.3% a year earlier, and accounted for 41.5% of the growth in the second quarter, government statistician Alhassan Iddrisu told a press conference.
  • "This is not a one-off spike. The sector has posted double-digit growth in every quarter for the past three years. Ghana's growth story today is ... substantially a digital story. That's what the data is telling us," Iddrisu said.
  • The expansion follows provisional growth of 6.4% in the first quarter, as the West African nation ‌continues to recover from one of its worst economic crises in decades.
  • "A 6.0% growth rate is very encouraging, but it only truly succeeds when it becomes better jobs, stronger services, and real opportunity reaching more people," Iddrisu said.
  • The government retained its key macroeconomic targets in a mid-year budget review in July, citing stronger-than-expected economic performance in the first half of the year.
  • The same month, the International Monetary Fund completed the final review of Ghana's $3 billion support programme, saying reforms and favourable commodity prices were helping stabilise the economy and reduce debt risks.
  • Consumer inflation stood at 5.0% in annual terms last month, opens new tab, down from 54.1% in December 2022, when the country was mired in a debt crisis.
