SMP: MTN Customers to enjoy same rate for calls on MTN and other networks
MTN Ghana today announced onnet/offnet parity measures on its network to ensure on-net/off-net parity for Voice and SMS special plans, promotions and bundle offers to enable customers to enjoy the same rate for calls on MTN and calls to other local networks.
In June 2020, MTN Ghana was declared a Dominant/Significant Market Power (SMP) in the Voice, Data and SMS markets by the National Communications Authority (NCA).
SMP classification
The SMP classification allowed the NCA, as mandated by law, to take remedial measures against MTN to curtail its market dominance (controlling more than 57 per cent of the voice market share, as well as more than 67 per cent of the data market share) in order to promote competition in the industry and also protect the interest of consumers.

The Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775) allows the NCA to take “corrective measures” against an SMP in order to promote competition, protect other mobile network operators and consumers.
As part of the corrective measures, the NCA, among other things, decided to “review and approve all charges by MTN”, set caps on what MTN can charge for its services, ensure that MTN’s access to information did not disadvantage other operators and also impose a 30 per cent interconnect rate for two years in favour of other “disadvantaged operators”.
The company in a press release on Monday (November 1, 2021) said it had complied with all the defined directives to date by the regulator with the objective to increase competitiveness in the telecommunications industry.
