Fairness, tolerance key to credible elections
The filing of nominations by presidential and parliamentary aspirants for the 2024 general election marks a significant milestone in the country's democratic journey.

So far, a record number of candidates have submitted their nominations, as the process ends today. (See Daily Graphic, September 5 issue, page 13).
This symbolises a vibrant democracy. However, as we approach election day, it is crucial that the Electoral Commission (EC) ensures fairness and transparency in its dealings with all aspirants, while citizens also embrace political tolerance.
This will play a vital role in ensuring the credibility and integrity of the electoral process. To achieve this, the commission must be seen to be impartial, transparent and communicative.
In line with that, it must provide clear guidelines and criteria that will warrant the disqualification of candidates, including the provision of timely and accurate information about the electoral process.
By so doing, the Daily Graphic believes that the EC can build trust and ensure that all candidates are given equal opportunities to contest.
The Daily Graphic is of the opinion that fairness and transparency are essential components of a democratic election. When the EC is seen to be impartial, citizens would trust the process, and the outcome will be accepted by all.
Conversely, perceived bias or manipulation can erode confidence in the process, leading to electoral disputes and unrest.
Ghana has made significant strides in democratic consolidation; let us not compromise our progress. On the other hand, political tolerance is also crucial for a peaceful and inclusive process. And so, as the campaign season heats up, candidates and their supporters must respect one another’s rights to contest and campaign.
Constructive debates among candidates focusing on policies and ideas, rather than personal attacks, are essential.
By being tolerant, the Daily Graphic believes that our political leaders and their followers can create a culture of respect and civility, where candidates can disagree without being disagreeable.
As we approach the election day which falls on December 7, this year, the citizenry must demand nothing less from the EC and political leaders.
The EC must also be proactive in communicating its process, provision of clear guidelines and addressing concerns promptly.
At this juncture, we will like to commend the EC for the process so far but it must continue to engage with all stakeholders, especially the political parties, through the Inter-Party Advisory Committee to address all concerns which would be brought to its attention.
The EC has the reputation, inside and outside of Ghana, for professionalism, independence and integrity, which it worked hard for through transparency and consistent communication with all political parties.
Nevertheless, as the December 7 elections approach, issues surrounding the Provisional Voters Register must be addressed, which include unauthorised voter transfers and missing names to ensure a peaceful, transparent and credible polls.
The 2024 general election presents an opportunity for the country to consolidate its democratic gains. Fairness, transparency and political tolerance are essential for a peaceful, credible and inclusive process.
The EC must ensure a level playing field for all candidates, while Ghanaians embrace political tolerance. By doing so, we can cement Ghana's reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa and ensure that the outcome of the election reflects the true will of the people.
We also want to wish all presidential and parliamentary aspirants who have filed their nomination the best of luck as they wait for the outcome of the process.
Again, we want to emphasise that the issue of political tolerance is essential for a peaceful and inclusive process. Let’s all work together to create a democratic environment that is worthy of emulation.
