Dressing decently is a must for gospel musicians —Mavis Asante to gospel acts

GOSPEL musician Mavis Asante has voiced concerns over the growing trend of indecent dressing within the gospel music industry.

In an impassioned plea, Mavis Asante, who is now a reverend minister, underscored the importance of modest dressing among gospel musicians, stressing that the essence of gospel music lies not only in its melodies and lyrics but also in how artistes portrayed themselves to the public.

The songstress who is known for her popular hit Obaatan believes that the attire of gospel musicians should align with the spiritual principles they sing about to foster a sense of spiritual connection.

"Gospel musicians are not just performers; they are spiritual messengers, a conduit for divine inspiration. And just as the message is sacred, so should the vessel delivering it.

“Modesty in dressing is not about suppressing individuality, but ensuring that our outward appearance is a reflection of the reverence and humility we hold for the message we convey.

“I disagree with people who say we should not focus on the outward appearance but on the content. Don’t tell people to look into your heart. We cannot come and open your heart and see what is there. I’ll describe you based on what you present out there,” she told Graphic Showbiz in a recent interview.

She explained that her call for modesty extends beyond personal conviction to a broader responsibility for shaping the perceptions and expectations of the followers and lovers of gospel music.

She noted that she would continue to spark a broader conversation within the gospel music community to remind gospel musicians of their sacred duty to approach their calling with a deeper sense of discipline.

"Modesty does not negate creativity or self-expression. On the contrary, it encourages us to find innovative and meaningful ways to communicate our message without relying on flashy attire."

She called on fans and followers to remember the humanity of gospel artistes and include them in their prayers, emphasising the challenges they face and their need for support.
