MUSIGA organises health screening for aged members

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has organised a health screening exercise for beneficiaries of the Ageing Musicians Welfare Fund (AMWeF) at the union’s headquarters in Accra.

The screening covered hepatitis B, diabetes, prostate cancer, blood pressure and malaria. In all, over 50 musicians were screened.

According to some of the AMWeF beneficiaries, the establishment of the fund was  timely, considering the plight of some ageing musicians who hardly earned any income.

Nana Kwame Ampadu, one of the beneficiaries, recounted his recent invitation to the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi after performing on the ticket of AMWeF at the recent Asanteman Ball as a testimony of the impact AMWeF is making on society.

He, therefore, called for widespread support for the fund to enable more musicians to benefit from it.

The president of MUSIGA, Bice Osei Kuffour, also talked about what the union was doing to help provide sustenance for ageing members.

He touched on the union’s new rates for different membership categories and called on members to avail themselves of the benefits that come with the new rates.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Ms Dzifa Gomashie, called for unity within the union so that beneficial projects such as AMWeF could be enjoyed by more people.

There were solidarity messages from the Ghana Actors Guild and the Ministry of Gender, Women and Social Protection which has oversight responsibility for programmes targeting the aged in this country.

Present at the event were two ex-presidents of MUSIGA: Alhaji Sidiku Buari and Diana Hopeson and musicians such as Pat Thomas, Stan Plange of Uhuru fame.  Actors present included Solomon Sampah and Mawuli Semevor .

The health screening exercise was supported by Danpong Pharmacy.
