Messiah Prep/JHS launches 20th anniversary

The Messiah Preparatory and Junior High School at Akuse in the Eastern Region has launched its 20th anniversary celebrations with a call on the government to make Agricultural Science a core subject at the basic school level.

The Managing Director of Blue Skies Limited, Mr Alistair Djimatey, who made the call, noted that “if the subject is reintroduced as a core subject there will be educated farmers who will produce more food to feed the country.”

According to him, farming is an important aspect of the nation’s development so if agriculture is included in the educational curriculum, it will help the country have an effective agricultural system.

Mr Djimatey is of the view that since Ghana is a country that is projecting industrialisation in the global market, there is the need for an efficient, active and enlightened agricultural system, based on research, to produce industries and create jobs for citizens to reduce the unemployment rate in the country.

The Proprietress of the school, Ms Jane Mompi, said the Messiah Preparatory School was established in 1997 with five children and a teacher but currently had a population of 500 and 32 members of staff.

She explained that the vision of the school was to provide affordable education for the poor and the less privileged in society.

“I care about the poor and the needy and so if I am to do something to benefit the society, it should be something that will benefit the needy; hence, the establishment of this school,” she added.

The school, Mrs Mompi said, aimed at promoting academic excellence in a Christian environment.

She said since 2009 when the Messiah Preparatory School presented its first batch of students for the BECE, it had scored 100 per cent passes with aggregates between six and 10.

The Municipal Education Director of the Lower Krobo Municipality, Madam Rose Akenyo, pleaded with chiefs in the municipality to release lands to schools to start farms to grow crops for consumption.
