Cleaning tips for shirts, blouses

I have stated so many times in my articles on cleaning clothes that the first thing you need to do before cleaning your clothes is to read the care label instructions.

You should realise that they have been placed there for a particular reason, which is; to provide guidelines on how your clothes should be cared for.

Why invest so much money in your clothes if you can’t spend a few minutes to read the care instruction attached to the attire?

For instance, there are some clothes that should only be dry cleaned, hand washed, machine washed or otherwise. Furthermore, it will also indicate whether to tumble dry or air dry and the appropriate heat setting to use when ironing them out.

This week, let’s examine the care tips for cleaning your shirts and blouses.

Shirt/blouse care

If you can afford it, then it’s best to send your expensive shirts and blouses to the cleaners. I mean if you can spend to buy a shirt or blouse, you can equally spend a little extra to have it cleaned professionally.

There are, however, some shirts which will last longer when washed by hand.

Should you decide to do the washing yourself, here are some tips and guidelines to help with self cleaning.

• Start by reading the care label if there is any. It will indicate how to clean your shirt.

• Separate your shirts based on their colours into categories. Then wash in piles of same colour.

• Pre soak them before washing, this enables the dirt to loosen out and reduces the rubbing involved to get the dirt out when washing.

• Rub gently together to get off the dirt from the clothes. Do not pull on the shirt.

• If the stain is difficult to remove, apply a little detergent or soap on the spot  and rub gently

• To avoid excessive wrinkles, squeeze gently and allow to air dry. Machine dryers have a tendency of shrinking clothes.

• Don’t forget to condition your clothes to give it a soft feel and a pleasant smell. You can buy  a good conditioner and add a little to the rinse water.

• Iron your clothes with a steam iron and if you don’t have one, then iron your clothes while they are a little damp. This will give it a smooth finish.

• Avoid excessive heat as this can burn and damage your clothes.

• Printed shirts and blouses should be ironed on the reverse.

I hope this care tips has been useful to you.

We should all pay particular attention to or clothes and ensure that we employ the best practices at caring for and maintaining our clothes.

Have a blessed weekend.
