Ghana has launched a new app designed to help people verify the marital status of a prospective partner before entering into marriage.
Called Marrify, the app was launched in Accra on August 28, 2026, by Marry Right Ghana Ltd, a legal services firm based in Accra, in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP).
The application operates as a searchable digital registry designed to bring transparency to marriage administration. It pulls legal data from the Registrar-General’s Department, courts, assemblies, and the Ghana Gazette.
The initiative aims to help individuals carry out important checks before entering into a marriage and avoid the emotional, financial and legal complications that may arise when critical information about a prospective partner is not properly verified.
Beyond checking a prospective partner’s marital status, the Marrify app is a publicly searchable platform that enables members of the public to verify whether marriage venues, churches, pastors and Imams are duly licensed and registered to conduct marriages in Ghana.
The platform is expected to promote greater transparency and accountability in marriage administration while helping prospective couples make more informed decisions before committing to marriage.
Promoting transparency, stronger families
Speaking at the event, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, commended Marry Right Ghana for introducing an initiative aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability and public confidence in marriage administration.
"I commend Marry Right Ghana for this initiative and for recognizing the importance of strengthening transparency, accountability and public confidence in marriage administration in Ghana."
She emphasized that marriage extends beyond a legal union, highlighting its social, cultural and economic significance for individuals, children, families and communities.
The Minister mentioned that strong families are essential to social stability, responsible citizenship and peaceful communities.
"Marriage is more than a legal arrangement between two individuals. It is an institution that has important social, cultural and economic importance for individuals, children, families and communities. Strong families contribute to social stability, responsible citizenship and peaceful communities," she said.
Dr Lartey further stressed the importance of taking preventive measures to strengthen marriages and family life, including promoting informed decisions, mutual respect, responsibility and healthy relationships before challenges arise.
"It is therefore important that efforts to strengthen marriage and family life begin not only after challenges emerge, but also through preventive measures that promote informed decisions, mutual respect, responsibility and healthy relationships," she added.
