12 Tricycles for Bobgu Nyeyaa Yam Farmers

The lack of intermediary transport to cart fresh yam from the hinterlands to more accessible centres has been the bane of many farmers in the Northern Region.

The situation has often led to farm produce getting rotten in remote communities.

To help avert the challenge, the Root and Tuber Improvement and Marketing Programme (RTIMP) has presented 12  tricycles to a farming group, the Bobgu Nyeyaa Yam Farmers’ Association  in the Nanumba North District of the Northern Region to facilitate the transportation of members’ produce to the market centres.

The 12 tricycles that cost about GH₵64,000 were jointly purchased by the RTIMP and ECOBANK. The loan component of about GH¢32,000 from the bank is repayable within a 12-month period.

According to the Zonal-One Coordinator of the RTIMP, Mr Lambert Dandeebo, the programme, which was being funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), was part of an eight-year project which was in its final lap.

The project is also designed to ensure food security and improve the livelihoods of the rural poor.

The Northern Regional Director of Agriculture, Mr Boakye Acheampong, advised the beneficiaries to take good care of the machines.
