The convicts, Mumuni Bole and Mohammed Kadiri, both unemployed, were each sentenced to 25 years in prison.

They pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery, but after a trial of the case, the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, found them guilty and sentenced them accordingly.

Mr Obiri said the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

He said robbery was on the increase in the country, adding that there was the need for the situation to be tackled by all stakeholders.

Facts of case

Prosecuting, an Assistant State Attorney, Ms Esi Dentaa Yankah, said about 4 a.m. on June 7, 2011, the complainant was in her shop at the Kokomba Market at Agbogbloshie when Bole and Kadiri went in and demanded at knife point that she surrender all her valuables.

She said they took from the complainant GHc3,500 she had kept in a paint bucket, one pair of jeans shorts valued at GHc50 and two Nokia mobile phones valued at GHc150.

The complainant was, however, bold enough to raise an alarm and the two robbers took to their heels with the items, Ms Yankah said.

Passers-by, attracted by the complainant’s shouts, chased the fleeing men but were only able to apprehend Bole.

Bole led them to Kadiri, who said he had hidden the paint bucket containing the GHc3,500 in a gutter but he could not remember where the bucket was.

The prosecutor said the money had since not been retrieved.

Based on the facts, Bole and Kadiri were arraigned before the court
