Three people have reportedly died and at least 15 others, including a police officer have, sustained injuries following a violent clash involving a group of about 300 people at New Winneba in the Effutu North District of the Central Region.
The group, reportedly wielding guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks, allegedly moved into parts of the New Winneba township and attacked some residents, while several properties, including stores and residences belonging to natives, were damaged.
Graphic Online understands it is related to a land litigation issue.
The incident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. today (Sept 1, 2026), prompting the deployment of security personnel to the area to prevent further violence and protect lives and property.
The injured persons have since been taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital at Winneba, for treatment.
Personnel from the Central Regional Police Command, the Winneba Divisional Police headquarters and patrol teams from the Agona Swedru District have been deployed to the area to maintain security.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has also directed the deployment of additional personnel from the National Police headquarters to reinforce the security operation.
The reinforcement team includes two armoured vehicles to support personnel on the ground.
As of 2:45 pm, Graphic Online had information suggesting that the police have since brought the situation under control, while security personnel remained deployed in the area.
The circumstances that led to the clash and the identities of the three deceased persons were not immediately available.
The police have commenced investigations into the incident and were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the violence and damage to property.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with the security agencies as efforts continue to maintain peace and security in the township.
