5 Perish in accident in Ashanti Mampong

Five persons perished in an accident when the taxi in which they were travelling was run over by a KIA truck in Mampong in the Ashanti Region last Monday.

The brakes of the KIA truck, with registration number GW 1951-13, is alleged to have failed and the truck ran over the taxi, with registration number AS 4788-14, killing all five occupants of the taxi in the process.

The incident happened around the Vodafone office in Mampong.

The driver of the truck is being sought after by the police, after he had abandoned the truck and escaped.

Confirming the accident to the Daily Graphic, the Mampong Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Yaw Obeng Asubonteng, said the police were yet to arrest the driver of the truck to assist in their investigations.

Although the deceased had been identified, he declined to give their names, explaining that “the ethics of the profession do not allow me to do that”.

“We cannot tell exactly how the accident happened and if we get the driver, he will be of great help to us to know how it happened,” he added.
