With mobile data services being touted as the new frontier after voice telephony, understanding the “data” platform and what and how to maximise its use were the reasons for taking sections of the media through a knowledge series on data.

In his presentation, Mr Raymond Folley, Network Planning Engineer at Airtel Ghana, took the media through various topics such as Cellular Network Service, High Bandwidth Data Services, Evolution of Cellular Networks and the challenges facing the telecom industry.

Explaining the challenges, he said the rampant cuts in fibre cables during road construction and the nefarious activities of people who wrongly believed they could obtain copper from the fibre cables were some of the challenges resulting in the disruption of communications services to the general public.

Mr Folley further explained that land litigation, higher rent charges and the reluctance of some communities to have telecom masts located close to their neighbourhoods slowed the rapid deployment of telecom masts across the country.

Ms Edith Dede Samokie of the Marketing Department of Airtel Ghana touched on topics such as data charges, pay as you go and bundles, data gift bundles, capabilities of data devices on the market and the unique selling points of Airtel Data.

The Head of Corporate Communications at Airtel Ghana, Mr Donald Gwira, explained that the knowledge series was a way of further engaging the media as partners in providing timely and accurate information and education on the telecom sector to the general public.

“We will continue to invest in the network so we become the service provider of choice as the market begins to grow,” he added.
