Akyem Tafo residents protest location of new capital
Residents of Akyem Tafo in the Eastern Region yesterday embarked on a demonstration over an alleged attempt to make Kukurantumi the municipal capital for the yet to be created Abuakwa North Municipal.
The demonstrators, numbering more than one hundred, amid singing and dancing, carried placards some of which read: "We have the facilities for a new municipality", "why Kukurantumi and not Tafo", "don’t discriminate, Tafo is the best among the two towns"," and give us the capital, now"

They paraded through the principal streets of Tafo to register their concerns.
Led by some opinion leaders, the demonstrators who spoke to the Daily Graphic, said Tafo served as the venue for a number of financial institutions, an Electricity Company of Ghana sub-station, the police district command and institutions like the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG)
According to them with all those facilities, Tafo was better placed to host the new municipal capital.
Background
The government intends to create a number of new districts and also elevate some to municipal status. Since the announcement was made a number of communities have been jostling for the siting of the district capitals in particular areas.
