She explained that although it was the responsibility of the Prisons Service to ensure that inmates were reformed before they were released from jail, there was the need for collaboration between the service and society in general.

Mrs Tachie-Otoo, who is in charge of the Kumasi Female Prison,  made the statement at the Ahinsan Camp Prison near Dompoase in the Adansi North District in the Ashanti Region after she had led the Ashanti PRILAS to donate assorted items to the inmates of the camp.

Visit to the camp

The visit to the camp was part of the Ashanti PRILAS’s yearly visit to one prison in the region to donate and socialise with its inmates.

The members donated GH¢₡4,000 worth of assorted fruits, bags of rice, toiletries, sugar, bread, cooking oil and other items to the inmates.

In attendance were PRILAS members from the Amanfrom, Manhyia, Obuasi, Kumasi Female and Kumasi Central Prisons.

The Ahinsan Camp Prison currently has 168 committed prisoners who are serving  jail terms of between one month and three years and are currently working in oil palm plantations, maize and other farm projects.

The products from these farms are supplied to the Obuasi, Kumasi Central and Female Prisons, Amanfrom and other prisons.

Chief Superintendent Augustine Ohene-Tutu, the Officer in charge of the Amanfrom Camp Prison, who received the items, commended the PRILAS members for the support and called on other philanthropists, institutions and individuals to emulate the gesture.

He appealed for support to the camp to raise some pavilions and build toilet facilities for the inmates.
