Mr Opoku explained that the chieftaincy institution had contributed in many ways to Ghana’s current peaceful status.

Addressing the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs at its first general meeting, the minister added that apart from the laudable initiatives, projects and programmes that some individual chiefs had initiated in their areas of jurisdiction, the wise counsel from the national and the various regional houses of chiefs had helped the government and its agencies greatly in the formulation and implementation of workable policy initiatives.

Touching on the government’s vision for the Ashanti Region, the minister said the government was committed to modernising settlements in Kumasi in order to reduce congestion and to provide healthy living conditions for the residents.

He, therefore, promised to work closely with the chiefs and all other stakeholders in the region to ensure that the  government’s Better Ghana Agenda of expanding access and sanitation to all would become a reality.

Mr Opoku also mentioned that the government had so far spent GH¢120 million on the provision of education, health and other social infrastructure such as classroom blocks, assembly and dining halls, science laboratories and teachers’ bungalows in the region.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, asked the government to appoint competent people for the position of metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives and not people who had selfish desires.

He commended the government for making development projects available to the various communities.
