Builsa North DISEC forms committee to investigate Sandema SHS riot

The Builsa North District Security Committee(DISEC) in the Upper East Region has commissioned a five-member Committee charged with the responsibility of establishing both the remote and immediate causes of students' disturbances at the Sandema Senior High Technical School that resulted in the death of a Male student on Tuesday.

The Committee has been given three weeks to submit a report while ensuring that it determined what exactly led to the death of the first-year student identified as Abdulai Nashiru.

Another female student also sustained injuries in the process but she has been treated and discharged at the Sandema District Hospital.

The incident is said to have happened when police fired both tear gas and warning shots to quell the students' unrest.

The Builsa North District Chief Executive, Mr David Afoko who made this known to Graphic Online on Thursday intimated that the Committee has further been tasked to assess the extent of damage caused to school property including those belonging to tutors of the school since some of the students were said to have burnt two motorbikes, smashed a vehicle and destroyed louvre blades fixed to both teachers' bungalows and the dining hall.

Mr Afoko further stated that the next line of action would be determined by the findings of the Committee's report.

He explained that the school was temporarily shut down to allow students to continue their studies as soon as possible because keeping them away from school for a longer period also has it’s own ramifications.

Meanwhile the Daily Graphic gathered that the students have complied with a directive to leave the school compound as it has been closed down.Further checks revealed that the students have all gone home leaving behind a skeletal staff of the school.
