According to the prosecutor, ASP Richmond Akwasi Yeboah, Rita is a 23-year-old teacher at Salosi, a suburb of Somanya, while Sowah is a carpenter and lived at Akuse.

He said in December last year, Rita received a gift of GH¢200 from a friend, which she kept in her room.

ASP Yeboah said on December 27, 2013, Rita visited a friend who was hospitalised at the Akuse Government Hospital, and on her return to Salosi, she met Sowah, who told her that he had a vision about her and that the GH¢200 gift she received had to be prayed over before she spent it.

The prosecutor said Sowah convinced Rita and she took him to her room.

Sowah, the prosecutor said, collected the GH¢200 from Rita, prayed over it for over 30 minutes and instead of giving it back to Rita, he rather put the money into his pocket with the explanation that he needed to offer more prayers on the money before returning it to her.

According to the prosecutor, Sowah promised to return the money the following day but failed to do so.

When Rita realised that she had been duped, she made a report to the Somanya Police.

On January 23, 2014, Sowah, who had gone into hiding since the day he committed the crime, was spotted at the Somanya roundabout and with the help of some sympathisers, he was arrested and handed over to the police.
