The couple is investing $ 2 million in the construction of the 120-bed hospital, which will have accommodation for staff, especially the nurses and doctors.

Through collaboration with the Sanford World Clinics of the United States, the hospital would be expanded in future into a $10 million facility.

Addressing guests at the sod-cutting ceremony, Mr Owusu, who is a partner in the E.O Group said he was giving back to society what God had blessed him with. The E.O. Group is the company that brought in Cosmos Energy, the firm that found Ghana’s oil in commercial quantities.

He said he had made a fortune in life and could have invested in “building a mansion protected by wild dogs”, buy a number of Rolls Royce cars and other expensive vehicles, especially with what happened after the oil find in Ghana.

Sir Dr Kwame Donkor Fordwor, an economist, who chaired the function commended the couple for giving back to society, especially when the maternal mortality rate in the country kept rising.

The Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Yamin, stated that the government was commited to promoting quality healthcare delivery by providing the needed equipment, logistics and infrastructure development in health facilities in the country to ensure effective healthcare service.

He said the promotion of quality healthcare service must be seen as equal responsibility for all Ghanaians and therefore lauded by Mr and Mrs George Owusu for their initiative.
