Court sentences security man to death for killing ex-lover

Stephen Owusu Afriyie, a 61- year old security man who, driven by jealousy stabbed and killed his ex-lover, Akua Frimpong, has been sentenced to death by hanging by a Kumasi High Court, after a two-year trial.

The convict, a security officer of the Multi Credit branch at Bantama in Kumasi, would in addition, serve a 10-year-jail term for stabbing his 55-year-old ex-lover’s boyfriend Kwaku Ofori, in the chest, back and left shoulder with a knife in a murder attempt.

He pleaded not guilty to two charges of attempted murder and murder.

However, the seven-member jury, found Afriyie guilty and unanimously agreed to convict him based on the ample available circumstantial evidence.

Miss Gyamfua Sarpong, Senior State Attorney told the Court that the convict on January 7, 2013 raging with jealousy about his ex-lover’s relation with her new-found love rushed into their room and committed the dastardly act.

The Court presided over by Justice Edward Kwaku Bosompem Apenkwa heard that the deceased also known as Habiba, lived in the same house belonging to her brother Michael Asare-Darko, alias “Old soldier, “at Atwima-Techiman, near Kumasi and became lovers though they were distant relatives.

Their clandestine love affairs came to light and family members advised them to break up what they believed was an incestuous relationship.

The deceased obliged and later found Kwaku Ofori, a 40 year- old truck Driver resident at Sefwi-Wiawso in the Western Region.

The convict was arrested and nearly lynched by an irate mob who broke into his room where he had locked himself up after the act.

The knife, used to commit the crime was retrieved at the crime scene, while deceased was taken to the morgue at Komfo Akomfo Teaching Hospital.
