Entrepreneurs urged to employ, train fresh graduates

Ghanaian entrepreneurs have been asked to employ fresh graduates and  train them to acquire the necessary experience.

According to the General Manager of Wilmar Africa, producers of Frytol cooking oil, Ms Fatima Alimohamed, graduates unemployment was growing annually because the business community “does not engage the services of fresh graduates with the view that they are inexperienced”.

“This issue, if not properly dealt with, could negatively affect the morale of many graduates, with its consequences over-whelming the nation,” she said at an event in Accra.

The event, which was dubbed: “Dinner in the Dark”, was to raise the spirit of Ghanaians in the wake of the current power crises.

Over 60 participants were made to use their other senses apart from their eyes to eat in the dark.

The programme was part of a campaign to promote made-in-Ghana goods and honour the public who had, over the past years, benefited from frytol cooking oil.

Train your own people

Ms Alimohamed said the situation where industries demanded some level of work experience before employing graduates was a deterrent to career growth.

“Where else do we want our graduates to get the experience if we don’t employ and train them to gain the needed expertise?” she asked.

According to Ms Alimohamed, Ghanaian businesses must start to accept fresh graduates and give them the needed assistance and exposure to the highest level.

Touching on the rationale behind the campaign, she said a lot of activities had been organised over the past month to promote locally made products.

“The programmes include “Tales from Ananse”, “Anopa, Awia ne Enyumre” (meaning Morning, Afternoon and Evening), and an “oware” tournament,” Ms Alimohamed said.

She said Wilmar Africa had initiated a project where the disabled, about 200 in number, would be given tricycles to sell Frytol products.

She called on other corporate organisations to support the youth with employable skills to enable them to contribute to the development of the nation.
