The man yet to be identified, however, managed to escape from the accident scene and left the car, a Toyota Corolla with registration number, GE 5675-13, with the 30 bags of rice.

Some items in the container shop, including bathroom and kitchen accessories were partly destroyed, but no injuries were recorded.

Deceit

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Dansoman District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Mr Felix Apedo, said the police were informed that the suspect had collected the bags of rice from a shop after deceiving the attendant into believing that he was doing so with the consent of the owner of the shop.

He said at 10:30 a.m. last Wednesday, the run away suspect posed as a customer of the shop that deals in groceries at Sakaman and told the shop attendant that he had the permission of the shop owner to take delivery of 30 bags of rice.

To convince the shop attendant about his claim, the suspect was said to have made a call on his phone and purportedly spoke to the owner of the shop.

Failed attempt

After this, the bags of rice were loaded onto the saloon car and he took off.

However, luck eluded him when the owner of the shop arrived in a taxi just then and saw the suspect driving away with the bags of rice in his car.

“The owner who became suspicious, attempted to stop the car while she tried to enquire from the shop attendant,  who had bought so many bags of rice so early in the morning, but the man sped away and in his hurry to get away, run into a shop nearby” he said.

Mr Apedo said investigations were ongoing.
