The residents were screened by medical officers from the Korle bu Teaching Hospital and some members of the church.

Rev. Dr Francis Nyarko, head pastor of the centre, said the church was aware of the healthcare challenges confronting people and took the initiative to assist residents of the area.

A medical officer from the National Aids Control programme, Dr Benard T Dornoo, said the exercise revealed that most of the people were hypertensive, diabetic while some had malaria.

He cautioned the public against poor eating habits and appealed to the health authorities to make it a policy to establish free checkup units within every government health establishment in the country.

The exercise, which formed part of the church’s outreach programme, was supported by some pharmaceutical companies including Tobinco, Ancastar, East Cantonments and Greenland Medical Supplies.
