Free SHS still intact: GES debunks GH¢1,500 ‘chop box’ and trunk payment claim

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy has been cancelled and parents have been directed to pay GH¢1,500 for chop boxes and trunks.

The GES said the claim was false and urged parents, guardians, students and the general public to disregard the publication.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, the Service said management had not cancelled the Free SHS policy and that the Director-General had not directed parents or guardians to pay for chop boxes, trunks or any other items.

It also said the Director-General did not have the authority to cancel the Free SHS policy.

The GES, therefore, urged parents, guardians, students and members of the public not to make payments to anyone based on the information circulating on social media.

The Service advised the public to rely on official information issued through its authorised communication channels.

It also cautioned the public to treat unverified information circulating on social media with care.

The GES further appealed to members of the public and media organisations to desist from creating, publishing or circulating false information capable of causing anxiety and confusion among parents, students and the wider public.

The statement was signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at the GES.
