It used the occasion to constitute the various zonal councils under the assembly.

Addressing the members, the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr John Kwao Sackey, told them that the unit committees and zonal councils were critical to the success of the decentralisation system in the country.

“It is for this reason you have been elected by the people to ensure that their development needs are met, while helping to mobilise the community members for self-development projects,” he said.

He reminded them that they had been called “to serve and not to be served, to act as agents of development not division and self-development”.

Mr Sackey told them to develop good relations with the key stakeholders to advance the tenets of the local government system and added, “I, therefore, urge you to establish cordial and friendly relationship with them in the interest of the people in order to make your work more effective and achieve good outcomes.”

He pleaded with the zonal council chairmen to work closely with the technocrats to ensure maximum benefit from the zonal councils, stressing that they must follow laid-down rules in the disbursement of public funds.

In a speech read on his behalf by his deputy, Mr Isaac Nii Djanmah Vanderpuije, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, said he was happy that the committee was being inaugurated, though it had taken time.

 Responsibilities

“Your election and appointment as Unit Committee members are ample affirmation of the confidence and trust the people have in you. Therefore you are expected to live up to the responsibilities reposed in you by the people.”

“Make them part of the decision-making process as well as governance at the grass-roots level. In accepting the privilege and responsibility to serve as Unit Committee members, you have become part of the Local Government System,” he told the newly inaugurated members.

 Internally generated fund

Nii Afotey Agbo urged the Unit Committee members to support the assembly in its efforts to generate more revenue for development.

He said the over-reliance on the central government chest for development projects was gradually becoming a thing of the past, “and I’m proud that the Ga East Municipal Assembly is by no small means setting the pace in this direction”.

Nii Afotey Agbo commended the assembly for the massive development projects it was undertaking from its internally generated fund.
