Galamseyer, 3 others die in separate accidents

A 26-year-old man suspected to be an  illegal gold miner (galamseyer) lost his life when he slipped into a mine pit at Kunsu near Mankranso in the Ahafo Ano South District of the Ashanti Region last Friday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Kwaku Baafi, 26.  His remains have been deposited at the 2Plus Mortuary at Sikafremogya near Mankranso pending autopsy.

The Mankranso District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr John Adusei, who confirmed the incident said the deceased was a mason apprentice resident at Mankranso who lived in the same house with his father, Kwame Antwi.

DSP Adusei said Baafi abandoned his apprenticeship and engaged in galamsey activities on the blind side of his father.

He said last week Friday about 5 p.m., Baafi lost his life when he accidentally slipped into a mine pit.

In another development, DSP Adusei said, Emmanuel Akwasi, 23, who  was riding a motorbike with registration number M-16-AS 3181 from Kunsu to Boatengkrom with a pillion rider died in a head-on collision with another motorbike.

He said on reaching a section of the road near Nkrabea, Adusei attempted to overtake an unidentified tricycle and in the process collided head-on with an oncoming motorbike being ridden by Issaka Akodo, 34, who was carrying two pillion riders.

He noted that all the victims sustained injuries and were rushed to the Mankranso Government Hospital but the two riders,  Akwasi and Issaka, died shortly after arrival.

DSP Adusei said the three pillion riders, Bugrebil Zubik, John Logre and John Mba, who were in critical conditions had been referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). 

Zubik later died at KATH, while the  two other victims  are responding to treatment.
