GH¢200 million Central Medical store was deliberately burnt down – Report

The fire, which razed the GH¢200 million Central Medical Stores (CMS) in Tema to the ground in January 2014, was deliberately started by unidentified individual(s), Accra-based Citi FM reported on Friday, citing the report of an investigation launched last year to determine the cause of the fire.

The Central Medical Store was storage facility where the Ghana's medical equipment and drugs were stored for onward distribution to health facilities across the country.

The fire was preceded by an investigation initiated by the then Health Minister Dr Kwaku Agyeman-Mensah into allegations of corrupt practices at the CMS.

According to Citi FM, the current Minister Health Minister Alex Segbefia gave the assurance that when the report is released today, it will provide more details about the circumstances leading to the burning of the store.

“While we rebuild the new Central Medical Stores, the report of the Central Medical stores will be made public and once that is done we can give a little bit more light on what’s happening with the stores,” Mr Segbefia was quoted as saying.
