The acting President of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), Benjamin Otoo, has dismissed reports of purported new appointments making the rounds.
Mr Otoo said the issue was currently before the High Court for determination.
In a statement, the acting CLOGSAG president said the High Court had scheduled a date to determine the matter, and therefore, urged all regional and district executives of the association and all members to disregard and refrain from implementing any notices, directives or administrative actions arising from the purported appointments until the court had pronounced on the matter.
“The purported appointments are disputed and their validity is before the High Court, hence Regional and District Executives should not recognise or implement the disputed appointments pending the Court's determination,” the statement issued in Accra yesterday said.
Collective interest
Mr Otoo said the office of the acting president remained committed to protecting the institutional integrity, property and collective interests of CLOGSAG.
The statement encouraged all members to remain calm, law-abiding and committed to protecting the unity and institutional integrity of CLOGSAG.
“I will like to encourage all stakeholders to exercise restraint and respect the judicial process.
“We must allow the court to determine the matter,” he stated.
Providing background to the issues, Mr Otoo said CLOGSAG was due to hold congress to elect new leaders and conduct other businesses in January 2023.
However, a member obtained a court injunction on the congress, leading to its suspension, until the court decides.
The high court subsequently granted an injunction to prevent the imposition of acting national executives outside the association's constitution, directing instead that outgoing executives maintained their positions or be replaced by neutral persons pending the determination of the substantive suit
At the same time, the former President, Dr Evans Agbeme Dzikum, was due for retirement.Per their constitution, Mr Otoo said, the President has to appoint a replacement in the absence of a president until such time that congress is held.
Dr Dzikum, accordingly appointed Mr Otoo, who was then standing for president unopposed, to act as president.
The Municipal Coordinating Director of the Adentan Municipal Assembly (AdMA), Seth Anim Boadi, was also appointed as the Vice-President until the association holds congress, which has to be done every four years.
CLOGSAG is a Registered Trade Union and the mouthpiece of workers in the Civil and Local Government Services as well as other establishments.
It was founded in Sekondi in 1918 with two main objectives; to provide better representation for government workers; and to serve as a recognised channel of communication with government upon matters affecting the service.
The longest serving Executive Secretary of CLOGSAG, Isaac Atteh Bampoe Addo, passed away on Friday, August 21, this year, at age 59, sparking fresh internal wrangling for the association which has seen so many of that.
