Barring any unforeseen incident, basic school students across the country will re-open for the commencement of the 2026-2027 academic year from next week, Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
Per the 2026-2027 academic calendar released by the Ghana Education Service (GES), kindergarten, primary and junior high school students would spend 15 weeks to cover the entire first term of the academic year.
It said when the students commenced the year, they would go on mid-term break on November 5 and 6, 2026.
Vacation
School would close on December 17, 2026 for students to go on vacation from December 18, 2026, to January 4, 2027.
The second term, made up of 12 weeks then begins from January 5, 2027 to March 25, 2027.
The 2027 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) would be written from Wednesday, May 5, 2027 to May 12, 2027.
The students would go on vacation from March 26, 2027 to April 19, 2027, to end the academic year.
Term
The third term resumes on April 20, 2027.
The term, which covers a total of 14 weeks thus ends on July 22, 2027 for vacation to commence on July 23, 2027.
Meanwhile, the GES has reminded all stakeholders that public holidays within the academic year will be observed accordingly.
In addition, it said a two-day mid-term break would be observed in each term for all basic schools.
It charged all heads of schools, teachers, parents and guardians to take note of the dates and ensure adequate preparation for a smooth and effective academic year.
SHS
For second cycle schools under the 2026-2027 academic calendar, Form One and Form Two students in Single Track schools will begin the academic year on September 18, 2026, and complete it on July 30, 2027.
Form Three students in both Single Track and Transitional schools are expected to complete their academic year on June 18, 2027.
The 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is scheduled to be held from April 6 to June 18, 2027.
The calendar indicates that transitional schools will continue to operate a blended system that combines classroom instruction with periods of online learning.
It also provided for a Christmas break from December 19, 2026, to January 4, 2027, and an Easter break from March 25 to March 30, 2027.
Form Two students will additionally have a mid-semester break from June 17 to June 20, 2027.
