I’m committed to peace, lawfulness — Bunkpurugu Paramount Chief

The Paramount Chief of the Bunkpurugu Traditional Area, Naba Abuba Nasinmong, has reaffirmed his commitment to peace and lawfulness.

He made the affirmation while refuting allegations of his involvement in introducing criminal elements into the community to instigate unrest.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, he said the rumours surfaced a few days after the National House of Chiefs postponed its ruling on the Bunkpurugu chieftaincy dispute, originally scheduled for August 28, 2024.

While calling for calm as the National House of Chiefs finalises its judgement on the chieftaincy dispute, he reassured the public of his commitment to supporting law enforcement and maintaining peace in the area.

He also condemned recent criticism of the Overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom and cautioned the youth against actions that could disrupt relative peace in the community.

Remain calm

The Queenmother of Bunkpurugu, Bijakiu Faustina Yennuturin, urged families involved in the dispute to remain calm and cooperate with the House of Chiefs to find a lasting solution to the protracted conflict.

She highlighted the adverse impact of the unending dispute on local businesses and families, particularly women and children, and asked both factions to soften their stance and give peace a chance.

Background

The Bunkpurugu chieftaincy dispute remains unresolved as of September 2024.

The National House of Chiefs had scheduled a ruling on August 28, 2024, but this decision has been postponed. The dispute centres on the legitimacy of the Jamong Family’s claim to the Bunkpurugu chieftaincy, which was previously rejected by the Northern Regional House of Chiefs in 2019.

Currently, the community and the parties involved are awaiting a final ruling from the National House of Chiefs, while local leaders, including the Queenmother are calling for an end to hostilities and a focus on community development and peace.
