Kidnapping: Kumasi police arrest 2 suspects

The police in Kumasi have arrested two suspects for the alleged kidnapping of a 14-year-old boy at Kwamo, near Ejisu.

The two suspects, Charles Appiah, 38 unemployed and Manasseh Fumey, 29, a security man at a private hospital at Kwapra allegedly kidnaped the boy at Kwamo in the Ejisu Municipality.

Their accomplice, one Felix, the brain behind the kidnapping is however at large.

They allegedly lured the boy from Kwamo to Ejisu and then to KNUST Junction in Kumasi, where they used chloroform to daze him and sent him to Apatrapa, near Tanoso.

They were arrested after the kidnapped boy managed to free himself and sought the assistance of passerby to alert the police to rescue him from an uncompleted two-storey building at Apatrapa.

At a press briefing in Kumasi on Wednesday, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Godwin Ahianyo, said the suspect at large together with the two suspects connived to kidnap the victim for a ransom of $300 from the grand mother of the victim who they suspected to be rich.

He said the person at large [Felix] managed to befriend the victim and invited him to Tech where he promised to give him a laptop and a phone.

According to the police, when the victim got there, Felix asked him to put something in a car which had been parked nearby and was chloroformed and driven to Apatrapa.

Rescue

Mr Ahianyo explained the suspects called the grandmother of the victim to demand the ransom.

According to the police, when the victim regained consciousness, he managed to release himself from the rope used to tie him and shouted for help which attracted the attention of a passerby who called the police.

Meanwhile, he said on March 26, 2019 when Fumey got wind of the rescue of the victim, he went to the police at Ejisu where it had been reported that the boy was missing to tell the police he overheard Charles Appiah and Felix discussing the kidnapping.

However, he said through police investigation, it was revealed that Fumey was part of the plan and was trying to extricate himself by reporting the issue three days after the incident.

He said the police are on the heels of the third suspect and the caretaker of the uncompleted building who rented it to the suspects for a fee of GHc300 for them to use to hold the victim.
