Volta queenmothers support flood victims in 3 Tongu districts

Members of the Volta Queenmothers’ Association last Wednesday presented consignments of clothes worth about GH¢20,000 to some victims of last year’s floods in the three Tongu districts.

They presented the items in Battor, North Tongu; Sogakope, South Tongu; and Adidome, Central Tongu.

At Battor, the Vice-President of the association, Mama Sename III, said although the floods had receded, they had left behind problems which were still affecting the well-being of the people.

For that matter, Mama Sename, who is also the Paramount Queenmother of Mafi, said it was only proper for corporate groups, various organisations and public-spirited individuals to continue to bring help to them.

She assured that the Volta queens would continue to support the flood victims with basic items to contribute to their relief and welfare. Mama Sename said bringing relief to disaster victims was a worthy cause in the broader national interest.

Timely

The District Chief Executive (DCE) of North Tongu, Osborne Fenu, who received the bales of clothing, said the gesture by the queenmothers was highly touching and timely, as 700 people displaced by the floods, including a large number of children, were still putting up in tents.

In the absence of their own homes, the DCE said, the displaced persons still needed basic items like food, clothes and toiletries at the camp.

He expressed gratitude to the queenmothers for their kindness and appealed to other organisations to assist the flood victims in similar ways to put smiles on their faces.

He also commended the Volta River Authority for providing a 40-seater bus to enable children to commute from the camp to their schools.
