Poppy Day

Poppy Day, which falls on November 11 every year, is observed in Commonwealth countries to remember the members of their Armed Forces who died in the line of duty during the First World War.

The day, specifically designated by King George V, is also recognised as a special day for war remembrance in many non-Commonwealth countries.

Social responsibility

Presenting the cheque, a Senior Corporate Communications Officer of the GCGL, Ms Kyerewaa Boateng, said the support formed part of the corporate social responsibility of the company.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Executive Director of VAG, Col Chris Nutakor (retd), described as sad the low participation of the public in the celebration of the day.

He attributed the situation to the low education and awareness given to the observance of the day, saying, “Many people don’t even remember the day, let alone know its significance.”

He, therefore, called for intensive education on the day and urged the public to throw their weight behind its observance.

Col Nutakor thanked the GCGL for the support and urged individuals and organisations to support VAG by purchasing poppy flowers and also making donations to VAG.
