GWCL disconnects water to police, Takoradi Poly

The Western Regional office of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has disconnected two police barracks, the Takoradi Polytechnic and other public institutions as a result of their indebtedness to the company, estimated at several millions of cedis.

The two police barracks are said to be owing the GWCL GH¢56,000, with the Takoradi Polytechnic, which also owes a huge amount, is believed to have reached an agreement with the water company on the mode of payment.

The disconnection exercise has led to an acute water shortage in the barracks, compelling the police personnel and their families to walk long distances in search of water.

Barracks

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, some residents of the barracks said they were helpless and appealed to the Regional Police Command to act quickly to save the situation.

They blamed the huge debts incurred on the supervision at the police barracks, to the extent that the water, meant for the security personnel, was being used by people outside the barracks.

A policewoman who pleaded anonymity said, “As we speak, people come to the barracks from the quarters to fetch water for free and now we are owing more than GH¢56,000.”

The Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the company, Mr Kwamena Acquah, said that the improved services required by the public could only be carried through with the revenue generated.

He also said if the public did not honour their part of the contract with the company by regularly paying their bills, it would be difficult for it to operate and serve them efficiently.

The move to disconnect state institutions was a directive that sought to recover the huge amounts owed the GWCL.

“We have two barracks owing us more than GH¢56,000. There are others who are also owing and immediately we are done with these areas, we will move to disconnect all of them,” he said.

Government institutions

Mr Acquah said beside the government institutions, every customer who owe us would be disconnected saying, “I must state that we have begun and we will recover all the debts.”

He urged those indebted to the company to pay their bills immediately since that would enhance and improve the services of the company.
