John Paintsil granted bail

Ex-Black Star defender, John Paintsil, was on Wednesday granted bail after spending a night in police custody for allegedly assaulting two police officers and stealing his wife’s car.

The Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Ms Effia Tenge, who made this known to the Daily Graphic, said the ex-Fulham star could not make his expected appearance in court yesterday because of the ongoing strike by the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG).

“He will be arraigned when the courts resume. The court will then direct us on the next line of action,” she said.

Arrest

Paintsil was invited by the East Legon Police last Tuesday for questioning following a report his wife made to the police that he had allegedly stolen her car.

Paintsil denied stealing the car and claimed that his wife forged his signature and effected a change of ownership of the car in her name.

The two-time World Cup player was, however, put behind bars after he had allegedly assaulted a police investigator and the East Legon District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr Emmanuel Basin-Tale, during the questioning session.

Falsehoods

Meanwhile, the ex-Fulham star has described the incident as unfortunate, stating that he would call a press conference soon to put out the right information.

Speaking to journalists after his release, he said a lot of falsehood had been peddled against him following the incident.

“I will, therefore, organise a press conference to clear my name and also protect my reputation,’’ he said.
