Members of the Kasoa branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) have welcomed the construction of an overpass on the Kasoa main road to ease the movement of pedestrians.

The leadership of the union told the Daily Graphic that the overpass would not only save lives, but also boost the business of commercial drivers.

The Chairman of the union, Alhaji Shaibu Artey, said some members of the union were initially apprehensive about the construction of the overhead.

“Some of the drivers thought that the construction of the overpass would affect their business, since it was going to lead to a relocation of bus stops where most people boarded vehicles to their various destinations,’’  he said. Alhaji Artey added that the leadership of the union organised a sensitisation programme for its members after some of them had expressed fear about the project.

“We told them that the project would rather benefit them. The overpass will help people to cross the street safely and they would  have a safe place to stand and wait for buses or join vehicles to their various destinations’’, he said.

According to the chairman, the drivers would be able to drive on the road without the fear of knocking down people trying to cross the road at various points.

He, however, pointed out that a lot of education would have to be carried out by the municipal assembly and the police to sensitise the public to the need to use the overpass after it had been constructed.

“We should try and make sure that the overpass does not end up as a white elephant after it has been constructed with taxpayers’ money.

A lot of education would have to go into sensitising the public to use the facility.
