Madina Police destroy narcotic drugs

The Madina Divisional Police Command yesterday destroyed large quantities of narcotic drugs and other exhibits that have been in their possession for the past 10 years.

Made up of Indian hemp, heroin, cocaine,  as well as fake local and foreign currencies among others, the items were retrieved from suspected criminals.

Indian hemp constituted the biggest chunk of the items destroyed.

A team of policemen, led by the Madina Divisional Crime Officer, Superintendent Joe Oppong, set the items on fire at the Aviation Park near Ashaley Botwe in Accra.

For two hours, the police team ensured that the items were burnt to ashes, in compliance with the order by the Madina Magistrate Court.

Decongestion

After the destruction of the items, the Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Affia Tenge, said the exercise was carried out because some of the items had been kept in the exhibits room for over a decade.

She said some of them were attracting rodents and contributing to the congestion in the exhibits room at the Madina Divisional Police Command.

She explained that although the Madina Police had gone through all police procedures for such an exercise, it had to be suspended three times due to the rains.

“Any time they tried to conduct the exercise, the rains set in and the exercise was suspended. This is because the items have to be burnt totally and on a rainy day, it would be impossible to burn them to ashes,” she said.

The PRO added that once the court had sanctioned the destruction of the items, the police had every reason to comply.

She said some of the exhibits were from suspects who were already serving various jail terms.
