Market, taxi station emerge on Achimota overpass

A market and a taxi station are gradually emerging on top of the Achimota old overpass in complete disregard to orders by the city authorities for people to desist from encroaching the area.

All manner of structures have been built by traders and artisans much to the inconvenience of pedestrians who board vehicles on the N1 Highway to Lapaz and beyond.

Some lotto operators have also placed their lotto kiosks close to the overpass.

Floating taxis have taken advantage of the emerging market to set up a station where people patronise their services.

Desertion

This is partly the reason why the Achimota Transport Terminal has virtually been deserted by drivers and passengers.

The Welfare Secretary at the Achimota Terminal, Victor Owusu, told the Daily Graphic that some drivers had decided to operate from the old overpass because business at the terminal was very slow.

“Several appeals to those drivers to stop such activities have fallen on deaf ears for which reason a task force is being formed to stop drivers from operating outside of the terminal”, Mr Owusu said.

Business

Business was briskly going on when the Daily Graphic visited the place yesterday.

A petty trader who gave her name as Gifty Laadi told this reporter that they were compelled to sell at their present location because they had no place to go.

Accidents

The Achimota old overpass section of the NI Highway has recorded a number of fatal accidents over the years with pedestrians being the most affected.
