PLAYBACK: Minority Leader demands action plan on NDC’s tax removal promises
The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo Markin, has called on the Minister of Finance designate to present a concrete plan for the removal of certain taxes when finally approved by the house.
In his opening remarks at the Appointment’s Committee sitting to vet ministers designate, he emphasised the need for a clear road map detailing which taxes would be eliminated and the timeline for their removal, specifically focusing on the controversial e-levy and betting tax.
In a pointed reference to the National Democratic Congress (NDC)'s campaign promises, the Minority Leader accused the government of attempting to backtrack on their commitments.
He reminded parliament of NDC flag bearer John Mahama's explicit promise to abolish both the e-levy and betting tax when the party assumed office.
"The NDC and our flag bearer John Mahama made clear promises to the Ghanaian people about scrapping these burdensome taxes, particularly the e-levy and betting tax, and we must stand by these promises," he stated, suggesting that any deviation from this position would be seen as a betrayal of public trust.
