The service gives farmers the opportunity to plan the day’s activities on account of the weather forecast that is generated by the mobile phone network.

Known as the ISKA Weather Service, it is an innovative technology intended to improve the well-being of farmers and can be accessed by dialing *455#.

Presenting a donation in support of the celebration of the Kobine festival of the Lawra Traditional Area, the General Manager of MTN for the northern business district, Mr James Basintale, expressed the hope that the service would benefit the farmers in the region.

“As a telecoms service provider, we believe in using mobile telecommunication technology to create convenience for our subscribers, and ISKA Weather is one such technology we are very excited about,” he said.

Farmdirect service

The ISKA service is an addition to the Farmdirect service offered by MTN which provides agriculture extension services for farmers on short code 30037.

The company donated a cheque for GH¢3,000, airtime worth GH¢500, assortment of drinks costing GH¢500 and a variety of MTN souvenirs all in support of the Kobine festival.

The company pledged further support for the festival and also for an inter-community football gala, a musical concert, a street jam and an inter-community cycling competition.

Mr Basintale said the company felt proud about its contribution to improvements in the standard of living of the people of the Upper West Region.

He recounted a number of projects the company had set up in the region, including the donation of a ventilator and an incubator to the Nandom Hospital, the provision of 20 boreholes for 20 communities in the Wa East and Lawra districts, the ongoing construction of a 20-seater ICT centre at Hamile through its partnership with the UNDP and a library at Gwollu in the Sissala West District among other projects, all of which cost about GH¢600,000.
