Yaa Yaaba, the 21-year-old mother, was said to have gagged the six-year-old with a cloth to prevent her from screaming, before putting her hands on the fire.

Some strong men in the community had to wrestle the mother before they rescued the girl from her strong grip.

Oppong Valley is a predominantly farming community near Wassa-Akropong, the capital of the Wassa Amenfi East District in the Western Region.

The incident

According to some residents, the young mother left some rice and stew she had prepared for her husband at home to run errands in the community. However, when she returned, her daughter who was also hungry had eaten most of the food.

Bent on teaching her daughter a lesson, the residents said, Yaaba gagged the girl and put her hands on the fire. However, the girl’s wailing was loud enough to attract the attention of a curious neighbour who wanted to find out why the little girl was wailing.

When the neighbour saw what was happening, she raised an alarm and the strong men rescued the young girl from her mother. The girl was then taken to the Wassa Akropong Government Hospital.

The Wassa Amenfi East District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr Albert Adiita, confirmed the incident when the Daily Graphic contacted him.

He said Yaaba was currently in police custody pending further investigations.
