However, the district has two medical assistants who manage the entire district to address their health needs.

The situation, according to the District Director of Health Services, Mr Clement Nti-Boateng, has created much pressure on the two medical assistants.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic at Asiwa, the district capital, the director said inadequate doctors at the health facilities always forced them to refer many of their cases to the Bekwai, Konongo, Obuasi and New Edubiase government hospitals .

He also lamented  the poor state of roads in the district, saying , the nature of the roads affect   the movement of vehicles that transport  emergency cases to  other hospitals.

He said with no ambulance in the district to convey referral cases, they had to fall on commercial and other private vehicles to convey such patients at great risk.

According to Mr Nti- Boateng, the district has two health centres and nine Community-Based Health Planning Service (CHPS) Centres.

The Asiwa health centre,  was constructed in 1974, but has since not been renovated.

Mr Nti- Boateng said the health infrastructure pose a great risk to both patients and medical staff, and, therefore, appealed to the Ministry of Health to initiate moves to renovate them.

He said renovating the  health facility would not only motivate the few health officers to work hard, but would also enhance quality health care delivery.

The director also appealed to the chiefs, assembly members and opinion leaders in the district to  provide accommodation for health personnel  posted to the district .

This, he said, would entice such personnel to accept postings to the district   for them to address the health care needs of the people.
