Northern Region wins Maggi cooking contest

Madam Rafika Yakubu from the Northern Region has won the final Maggi Cooking Competition organised in Accra.

The competition formed part of activities marking the 40th anniversary celebrations of Maggi one of Nestle Ghana Limited’s flagship brand.

As part of activities, the brand decided to organise regional cooking competitions for ladies between the ages of 18 and 35, who make up the brand’s core target.

In each region, 10 contestants were selected to participate in the cooking contest after a successful interview session on local radio stations.

With Nana Ama McBrown as the anchor, each region’s contest featured cooking tips and demonstration by a professional chef, a nutrition talk and finally, a two and a half hours cooking competition among the 10 contestants after which a winner was chosen by a panel of three judges. 

The competition was made more lively as contestants cooked assigned starters, main dish and dessert that they picked out of a mystery basket.

Madam Yakubu, who prepared ‘gari tz and okro stew’ came out tops among her other contestants.

For her prize, she received a GH¢1,000 cash, a maggi hamper and a rice cooker.

All other contestants received a hamper and rice cooker.

Giving a talk on the benefit of eating nutritious diets, a Nutritionist, Madam Deda Ogum Alangea of the School of Public Health, University of Ghana, Legon said “what you eat determines your health”.

She advised people not to eat just anything because of the festivities but to ensure that they ate balanced meals.

Madam Alangea advised people to see to it­ that they managed the portions they eat, peolpe should eat breakfast, fruits and vegetables, exercise, have enough rest and also eat less sugar and drink more water.
