Philanthropist rehabilitates Osu police cells

The cells of the Osu District Police Command, which were ruined in a jailbreak in 2012, have been rehabilitated by a philanthropist. 

The Managing Director of Relish Health Foods Company Limited, Mr Lawrence Addo, who had been detained in the Osu Police cells in 1976, financed the rehabilitation works at the cost of GH¢42,000. 

Relish Health Foods Company deals in a wide range of natural food supplements and herbal products.

Until the cells were rehabilitated, suspects arrested by the Osu police were taken to the Cantonments, La and Ministries police stations. 

The rehabilitated cells can accommodate 50 men and 20 women and have toilet facilities. All the cells and washrooms are tiled. 

Cell inmates have mattresses to sleep on and there is also a water storage facility to facilitate easy access to water when there is a shortage.

Patriotic citizen 

Before handing over the facility to the Osu District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police, Mr Joseph Owusu Bempah, Mr Addo said as a student at the University Of Ghana, he had been arrested together with other students during a demonstration against the then government.

“Seven of us were brought here to the Osu police station while the others were distributed among the other police stations. The Osu police treated us well.”

He said the police officers decided not to mix the students with the hardened criminals and so they were kept in the female cell.

However, he recalled that there were no toilet facilities which made life unbearable “and so I know how it is to use a cell without adequate facilities.”

For his part, Mr Owusu-Bempah commended the Relish Foods managing director for responding to the distress call of the Osu District Police Command.

In a citation presented to Mr Addo, the command described the philanthropist as an example of a good and patriotic citizen who has his nation at heart.
