Police arrest 2 over murders in Lukula conflict

Two persons have been arrested by the police in connection with the death of two people last Thursday following a communal conflict at Lukula, a farming community in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region.

A collaboration between the Savannah and the Upper East Regional police commands led to the arrest of the suspects whose names were given by the police as Abdul Rauf and Amidu Fuseini.

They were alleged to have fled Lukula to Sandema in the Upper East Region when the police mounted a search for them to assist in investigations into the death of the two persons who were identified as Alidu Yakubu, 37, and Amadu Yakubu, 40.

Alidu sustained machete wounds on the head before he died, while Amadu was shot in the ribs, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Northern, Savannah and North East Regional police commands, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mohammed Yusif Tanko, disclosed to the media in Tamale yesterday.

Briefing

DSP Tanko said the suspects, who were in the custody of the police in the Upper East Region, were to be transferred to Damongo, the capital of the Savannah Region, later yesterday as part of investigations.

He said calm had returned to Lukula and its environs following the deployment of police and military personnel to the area.

Background

The two persons were killed in a communal violence that broke out in Lukula following last Thursday night’s violence in the community.

Renewed attacks last Saturday morning and night led to the burning down of 34 houses in the community.
The violent conflict is alleged to be between two groups in the community over the construction of a Mosque in the community.
