Police arrest man for killing step son

A 55-year-old man who allegedly butchered his mistresss’ son for obstructing his relationship with the woman has been arrested by the police.

The man, identified as Kwaku Effrim, is said to have inflicted machete wounds on Kofi Annan, 25, while he was asleep on a veranda in front of his mother’s room in a compound house.

The suspect is said to have gone into hiding in Winneba after the act, but the police managed to arrest him later.

Some tenants are said to have found Annan in a pool of blood, but he was pronounced dead when he was rushed to hospital.

Suspicion

The Crime Officer of the Winneba District Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Rev. John Agbemebiase, told the Daily Graphic that the deceased’s mother, Efua Kwansema, reported the incident to the police on May 6, 2016.

He said preliminary investigations by the police established that an unknown person had inflicted machete wounds on Annan’s shoulder and neck while he was asleep.

It was suspected that  Effrim, who had been in a relationship with Kwansema for more than two years but had had confrontations with Annan over the relationship, had committed the act.

Kwansema, who told the police about her suspicion, claimed that her lover had been seen in the house on that fateful day after he had returned from Half Assini in the Western Region.

The suspicion that Effrim was the mastermind of the crime heightened when his whereabouts could not be traced shortly after the crime.

Assault

Rev. Agbemebiase said Kwansema told the police that Effrim had been beating her and that her son had not been happy with that development.

Before Effrim went to Half Assini, he said, he (Effrim) had assaulted Kwansema, who was taken to hospital by her children.

When Effrim returned and tried to visit Kwansema, Rev. Agbemebiase said, Annan prevented him from doing so, vowing that he would not allow his mother to continue with the relationship any longer.

It is believed that while Annan was sleeping alone on the veranda about 1 p.m. on May 6, 2016, Effrim took advantage of the situation to inflict the machete wounds on him.

The police, after mounting a manhunt for Effrim, later arrested him at his hideout in Winneba on May 10, 2016.

According to Rev. Agbemebiase, Effrim had admitted butchering Annan when he found him sleeping and with no one in the house.

Annan’s body has been deposited at the morgue of the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for autopsy.
