Police arrest one of attackers of Owusu Bempah’s church

The Police Administration says the Service has arrested one of the attackers of the Odorkor branch of the Glorious Word and Power Ministries International, led by Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah.

It has however granted the unnamed suspect, Police enquiry bail and he is to be reporting to the CID Headquarters for further investigation.

A statement issued by the police Friday evening, signed by ACP David Eklu, Director-General of Public Affairs, said the CID Headquarters had taken over investigation into the case.

It expressed concern over what it said was “a worrying trend of prophecies made by religious persons about the death of certain individuals which have the tendency of breaching public peace and causing fear and panic in the country.”

“The Police Administration is therefore cautioning these persons who make such pronouncements to be mindful of the security implications of their utterances.”

The statement also urged circumspection in media reportage of such pronouncements, saying the reportage and interpretations put on the comments are also disturbing.

“As a result, the Police Administration is cautioning Editors, media practitioners, discussants and owners of media establishments to be circumspect and exercise the necessary editorial responsibility to ensure that the media is not used as a tool for aiding the breach of the peace and causing fear and panic.”

The police warned factions opposed to any views to desist from any retaliatory acts, saying that causing harm, damage to property, rioting and issuing threats constitute a crime as they disturb public peace.

“The public is therefore advised to report actions which are likely to breach public peace, or cause fear and panic to the nearest Police Station”, it said.
