Police investigate destruction of wall at Anwomaso

The University of Science and Technology Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the demolition of a wall at Anwomaso near Kumasi.

One Opanin Kwame Dapaa is alleged to have demolished a wall which was part of an ongoing building project belonging to Opanin Kofi Owusu Afriyie’s family at Anwomaso. Kofi Mprah and Kofi Antwi, both of Anwomaso, have been named as accomplices.

On April 28, 2014, the suspects were said to have single-handedly pulled down the wall on the grounds that it had been built beyond the boundary line alloted to Opanin Afriyie’s family.

They claimed the wall had extended to an open space that was used for funeral ceremonies and other social activities and that the family of Opanin Afriyie had no right to build the wall.

However, Opanin Afriyie, who disagreed with the suspects, claimed the wall was built on his family plot and called in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and the police to ascertain the matter.

A spokesman of Opanin Afriyie’s family said the plot of land encompassing the wall was approved by the then Kumasi City Council in 1964 and that the wall was part of renovation works on the old family house that was begun in February 2007.

A copy of the Anwomaso town plan, which was showed to the Daily Graphic, corroborated his story.
